Before my annual trip to Appalachia, there is always the day before, spent in the house where I grew up.

It's the early-summer peak there now- a season I can see with my eyes closed- yet the saturated greens and lush skies hit me like a ton of bricks every visit.



And even on a day where sea and sky are a wash of watercolor gray, the scene is still arresting.
